so from what i understand, living in barcelona means that you pay really high taxes, but that every once and a while the city uses that money to throw a bangin party. well, la merce, the celebration of the patron saint of barcelona, is the biggest party every year. festivities started last night. the metro was open 24 to accomodate and it was jam packed. everyone in the city was out, and everyone was drunk. after i took a bottle of wine to the face, we headed to this carnival/concert thing. there were rides and food and games and there were 2 concerts going on (both free) one was a really good cover band (playing american music of course… i swear to god black eyed peas ive got a feelin is the theme song of barcelona) and the other was an epic house music show that was pretty much just blasting techno. there were THOUSANDS of people and it was amazing.
i got home at 4ish but, as georgine told me all last year, SPAIN IS NOT FOR THE WEAK. so i got my ass up out of bed this morning to participate in more of the festivities. my favorites were the gigantes, or “giant parade” where like 6 guys stand on top of each other and walk, and the human towers where like 20 guys stand on top of each other in a huge tower. the best part is that the people all the top are like 5 years old and its crazy to see them climb up each other.
then i got a hamburger off the euro menu at mcd’s and headed home to pack for oktoberfest… is this real life?
